Day 38 - 12/28 - Scarborough, Tobago
This morning we docked at a new country for us. And what would our major activity of the day be? Snorkeling of course. Our HAL tour left at 9:30am and we were in the second group of 16 in a smaller bus and eventually a smaller boat.
Our driver took us the scenic way to Pigeon Point Park where we boarded our glass bottomed boat captained by Captain Jack. He took us out to the Coral Gardens which were a nice display of coral in not very deep water. While there weren't as many fish today, the coral was pretty. We then had the opportunity to snorkel above the coral for a half hour or so. It was then a short ride over to the Nylon Pool, named that because of it's white color and the sand coral composition of the bottom. It's about 3 feet deep and the coral sand is used to exfoliate whatever floats your boat. It used it on my calloused feet. Then we went back to the beach and back to the port via the same route we came out on. There was much more traffic on the return trip.
Back at the port, we re-boarded the ship, showered, and changed into dry clothes before heading back out in search of some local food. We walked around and weren't successful in finding local food. All the locals were eating at chicken places like KFC or Church's or local vendors. The line at the KFC was 2 hours and we could see crew members bringing back bags of chicken and accompaniments. So I suggested that we hike UP to Fort King George. Little did I know it was a 2 mile hike up pretty steep hills in the heat. But we made it and enjoyed visiting the Fort with its views of the other side of the island as well as the harbor we're docked in. The views are very nice and worth it.
On the hike down we spotted a billy goat that was very photogenic as well as a steel drum training facility. At one intersection, Angela almost got hit by a speeding car who didn't hardly slow down for the crosswalk despite a police car who was stopped for us. Quick thinking and vigilance saved her.
Back once again on the ship, we cooled off and watched the sail away before eating another LIDO dinner of Thai seafood curry and more shrimp. I think I'm going on 2 weeks of shrimp every day for dinner. After dinner, I worked on my blog in the library before attending the 7:30pm entertainment on the World Stage. It was an Argentinian comedian, Dario El Goucho who was pretty good. We then attended the French Connection performance by the string quintet at the Lincoln Center Stage. Once again it was packed and very good. Afterwards we met our friend Larry and compared notes about our respective days. It also turned out that we'll be on the same excursion tomorrow.
We then enjoyed a cup of tea in the LIDO while I worked on my blog and my wife continued her Arabic studies. We're going to sample some food from what I affectionately call the 10:30pm feeding.
It's another busy day tomorrow in Trinidad. Stay tuned.
